Hello Dear Reader,
Do you remember a couple of weeks ago that I told you all about a great new Doctor Who cooking group called Time Lord Chefs?
For Katie’s first Time Lord Chefs challenge she has chosen the theme of “series 8”, that’s the series where the doctor has newly regenerated and looks like the Earth actor Peter Capaldi.
I have still not quite made my mind up about this newest series. I do like our new doctor but only one episode has had me on the edge of my seat. There is a lack of continuity with a different director and writing team for each storyline. A little birdy tells me that Steven Moffat, the current lead writer, has approached Russell T Davies about reviving one of his cunning ideas for linking various strands together, so hopefully the grand finale will bring everything together nicely.
I do, however, love the new title sequence for the show. This was based on a short video made by Billy Hanshaw, who is a Doctor Who fan and I love that fan art is influencing the actual programme. The new titles start with swirling clockwork cogs, suggesting the inner workings of the tardis or perhaps the universe itself. It feels very steampunk to me and inspired me to make these Doctor Who steampunk cookie cogs.
I used a simple spiced cookie recipe and then decorated with royal icing, edible silver dust and edible black ink.
Spiced cookie recipe
- 250g plain flour
- ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1 tsp ground allspice
- 150g butter, cut into cubes
- 220g soft brown sugar
- 1-2 eggs, beaten
1) Sift flour, bicarbonate of soda and allspice together. Rub in butter until resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in sugar. Add egg a little at a time until clumps together as a dough. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for half an hour.
2) Roll dough on a floured surface to about 2mm thick. Cut into desired shapes & placed on a greased baking tray. Pop into freezer for 15 minutes. Meanwhile preheat the oven.
3) Bake at 170ºC for 5 minutes, then turn tray and bake for a further 3-4 minutes until golden. Remove from oven, leave on tray for a few minutes to harden, then move to a cooling rack to cool. Once cold, decorate as desired.
Feel free to twirl your plate of Doctor Who steampunk cookies around singing ooh-ee-ooh during the opening titles when you watch the next episode. I may or may not have done this on Saturday evening! 😉
I am entering my Doctor Who steampunk cookie cogs into Katie’s Time Lord Chef event.

These look fantastic Vohn. It was only since Elizabeth had a Steampunk wedding that I cottoned on to what it was.
Thanks Choclette. Elizabeth’s wedding looked fantastic – I want to redo my own all over again with a theme!
I’m a big fan of steampunk – what fab cookies these are! Love them! I really ought to watch Dr. Who – I’ve only ever watched one episode (the weeping angels one) with my eldest during a ‘best of dr. who’ marathon. It’s something I really would have got into as a child but it wasn’t aired on Canadian television! Need to play catch up!
Thanks Elizabeth – I am still in awe over the steampunk bouquet you made for your wedding – it was amazing! 😀
Loving the cookies. Getting used to the new Doctor, but wish they wouldn’t muck with the theme tune. That really annoys me!
Aw thanks Jac! 🙂 I’m quite liking the new theme tune, as it feels like it is returning more to its original routes. I agree with you – I wish they hadn’t messed with it in the first place!
So beautiful Vohn!
What was interesting is reading that Capaldi himself didn’t feel like he got into the Dr’s role properly until the filming of the 4th or 5th episode.
Thank you Emma! 😀
That’s interesting that Capaldi felt that way. I really do feel that having a different writing team and director for each episode made it unnecessarily difficult for our new doctor to find himself.
These are just beautiful! So delicately formed! Very fine work, Vohn. 🙂
I agree with you about this season. I like Peter Capaldi a lot, but I feel like the writing hasn’t been consistent concerning his character. I am not the biggest Clara fan either, although points in this series have been an improvement on the range of emotions they’ve written her to show. I miss River Song- she’s my all time favorite Who character- and I wish they’d resolved some of the dropped threads of the show (Tasha Lem? The woman in the shop? Who placed the ad in the Victorian paper? Etc.)
Looking forward to featuring your creations again!
Aw thank you so much Katie – it was such fun making them. 😀
I do love River Song too although my all-time favourite characters are Ace and K-9!
These are fantastic looking. Was thinking how I can’t get my son interested in cooking, yet he is a huge Dr Who fan…. Gonna show him the picture.
Thanks Annie & I hope some of my crazy Doctor Who recipe ideas inspire him into the kitchen. 😉
