Día de los Muertos Cake

Hello Dear Reader,

Día de los Muertos, otherwise known as Day of the Dead, is a celebratory day in Mexico to honour and remember loved ones no longer with us. Día de los Muertos is the last day of a three day celebration, beginning on All Hallows Eve (31st October) and continuing through All Saints’ Day (1st November) and All Souls’ Day (2nd November).

Rather than being macabre, this is a happy day, a family day of reconnecting with each other and telling amusing stories of those no longer with us. It is a colourful day of flowers, special food and sugar skulls. Here is the sugar skull I made…

Día de los Muertos Cake

This is a chocolate beetroot cake made using a skull cake pan that I bought really cheaply (30 pence!) after last Halloween. I then decorated my Día de los Muertos cake using black, white and red royal icing and some edible silver silk and edible black pen.

I am lucky to have lost only one loved one this year – a few weeks ago my dear cat Figaro left us after 16 years.
Mr Vohn gave me quite a scare last weekend but I’m delighted to say that he only required one night in hospital and seems fully recovered. One of the strangest things for me was staying in the house by myself that night – I suddenly realised it is something I’ve not done since Figaro joined our lives! Boy did I miss his purrs and cuddles that night. R.I.P. wee man!

  1. Sorry to hear about your cat – always a tragedy to lose a dear animal.

Your cake is amazing, how very clever.

    • Thanks Choclette. It’s going to take me a long time to stop looking at the armchair he claimed as his sole property without being surprised he’s not in it!

  2. Sorry to hear about your cat Vohn. Your cake looks stunning x

What a brilliant cake! Love the idea of the chocolate and beetroot inside. Such sad news about your cat, pets are such a big part of the family

    • Thanks so much Jacqui! 🙂 Yes, we all keep having those odd moments of looking for him and then remembering. 🙁
